Roofing in Hampton: what to plan for

Fundy fog and salt air: aluminum cannot rust

In Saint John, St. Andrews and along the Fundy coast, and on the Northumberland Strait at Shediac, salt air and fog are part of the weather, and salt is what wears out steel roofing once its coating is breached. Aluminum forms a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if scratched, so an Interlock® roof has no steel core to rust, on the coast or inland.

Cold inland winters, freeze-thaw and ice

Inland New Brunswick winters are colder than the Nova Scotia coast: January averages −9.2 °C in Fredericton and −8.4 °C in Moncton, against −5.7 °C at Halifax Stanfield (Environment and Climate Change Canada, 1991–2020 normals). Freezing rain, thaws and refreezes are hard on asphalt shingles and cedar. Aluminum absorbs nothing and has no granules to lose, the panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, and we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote. Ice dams start with heat escaping into the attic, so we look at insulation and ventilation with you as well.

Older homes in Saint John, Fredericton and the river towns

Older wood-frame houses in Saint John and Fredericton, farmhouses up the Saint John River and newer homes in Quispamsis, Rothesay, Dieppe and Riverview all take the same system. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles give the look of slate or wood at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope, and we confirm yours at the consultation.

Farms, camps and properties near the woods

On a farm the house, barn and shop can share one profile and colour. Where forest comes close to the house, around Miramichi, Fredericton and the upper Saint John River, we can quote the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly, which uses two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the panels. Aluminum itself does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof.

Condominium complexes

Under New Brunswick's condominium statute (SNB 2009, c C-16.05) the board of directors of the condominium corporation usually decides on the roof, often with a reserve fund study in hand. We give boards one profile and colour across every building, the product documents they ask for, and both warranties in writing.

One Maritimes company, with a New Brunswick line

We have no office in New Brunswick. One office in Dartmouth, NS serves New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and consultations are at your home or on Zoom. We install every roof ourselves; the manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty, which covers New Brunswick, come with it, and after the install, service comes from the same company.
