Environmental Claims & Substantiation

Effective Date: October 5, 2026 · Last Updated: October 5, 2026

TL;DR – Environmental Claims & Evidence

When we say the aluminum in an Interlock® roof has up to 95% recycled content, that the panels are recyclable, that the CRRC-rated colours can cut cooling-energy use by up to 25% (actual savings vary), or that it is built to be the last roof you need, we mean something specific and checkable. This page lists each environmental claim Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. makes, the evidence behind it, and the words we deliberately avoid. Substantiation is available on request from policies@interlockgroup.com.

1. Why This Page Exists

In Canada, environmental marketing claims are governed by the Competition Act's deceptive marketing provisions. Since June 20, 2024, paragraph 74.01(1)(b.1) has required a claim about the environmental benefits of a product to be based on an adequate and proper test, and paragraph 74.01(1)(b.2) has required a claim about the environmental benefits of a business or business activity to be based on adequate and proper substantiation. The business making the claim must be able to prove it. The Competition Bureau's guidelines, Environmental claims and the Competition Act, explain how the Bureau applies these rules: claims should be truthful, properly tested, specific about what is being compared, not exaggerated, and clear.

We support those standards. This page connects each environmental statement on this website to the evidence it rests on, so that you, the Competition Bureau or a competitor can check our work.

2. Aluminum Recyclability

Claim: Interlock® roofing panels are recyclable.

Basis: The panels are formed from aluminum sheet. Aluminum is recovered through established scrap-metal recycling streams across Canada and can be recycled repeatedly. At the end of the roof's service life, the panels can be taken to a scrap-metal recycler as aluminum.

Qualification: Roofing panels do not go in household blue-box or curbside recycling; they go to scrap-metal dealers and construction-waste recyclers. Check with local facilities for what they accept.

3. Recycled Content

Claim: The aluminum in Interlock® panels has up to 95% recycled content.

Basis: The figure is the manufacturer's. Interlock Roofing Ltd. states on its recycling page (interlockroofing.com/resources/recycling/) that it uses up to 95% recycled aluminum, and its product specification data lists the panel aluminum as 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 alloy (ASTM B209) with approximately 95% recycled content.

Qualification: “Up to” means the share of recycled aluminum depends on the coil in production; 95% is the upper figure, not a guaranteed minimum for every panel. We do not claim the panels are made from 100% recycled aluminum.

4. Reflective Colours & Cooling Energy

Claim: Interlock® roofs can cut cooling-energy use by up to 25% compared with conventional dark roofing; actual savings vary.

Basis: The panels are finished with the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605. Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC): each rated colour's solar reflectance and thermal emittance are measured under the CRRC product rating program and published in the CRRC Rated Products Directory and on the manufacturer's CRRC page (interlockroofing.com/specifications/crrc-rated-roof-products/). The “up to 25%” figure is the manufacturer's published figure for reflective Interlock roofs (interlockroofing.com/faq/). It is an upper bound, not an expected result.

Qualification: Actual savings depend on climate, colour, attic insulation and ventilation, roof orientation and the house itself. We always state “up to” and “actual savings vary” with the figure, and we do not promise a specific dollar or percentage saving for your home. Where we call an Interlock roof “energy-efficient”, we mean this reflective-finish property and nothing broader.

5. Longevity as Sustainability

Claim: A roof that does not need replacing generates less waste than one that does.

Basis: The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty from the manufacturer, Interlock Roofing Ltd., covers the original purchaser for as long as they own the home, and the aluminum panels do not rust. A roof built and warranted to that standard avoids the repeated tear-off and disposal of shorter-lived roofing. This is a durability comparison. It is not a claim that any roofing product is impact-free to manufacture, ship or install, and it does not mean the roof needs no maintenance.

6. Certifications & Testing

Independent evaluations and listings issued for the manufacturer's products that stand behind product claims on this website. Copies are available from the manufacturer or from us on request:

  • CCMC 10475-R — Canadian Construction Materials Centre evaluation (Slate & Cedar shingles)
  • ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1790 — code-compliance evaluation (aluminum alloys, thicknesses, wind-uplift tables, fire-classification conditions)
  • UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistance listing (Intertek, under Delta Building Products) for the Diamond, Shingle and Slate, Shake and Tile panel families
  • Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) product ratings for rated Alunar® colours — solar reflectance and thermal emittance
  • AAMA 2605 certification of the Alunar® 70% PVDF coating system
  • Alunar® coating performance, warranted for 30 years against chalking beyond ASTM D4214 rating 8 and colour change beyond 5 Hunter ΔE units per ASTM D2244

A listing or rating covers the product characteristic it names and nothing else. None of them is an environmental certification of the product as a whole, and we do not present them that way.

7. What We Do Not Claim

We avoid environmental words we cannot measure. We do not describe our products, our installations or Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. as “eco-friendly”, “green”, “sustainable”, “carbon neutral”, “net zero” or “climate positive” without a specific, substantiated attribute stated beside the word. We do not claim the panels are made from 100% recycled aluminum, that their manufacture is impact-free, or that a reflective roof will save a particular amount of energy in your home. We make no ENERGY STAR claim for any roof, and we make no environmental claim about Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd.'s business as a whole.

Where we say the panels are made in Canada rather than shipped in from overseas, we are stating where they are manufactured (by Interlock Roofing Ltd., in Delta, BC); we do not claim or quantify any transport-emissions saving.

If you find an environmental statement on this website that does not trace back to this page, tell us and we will substantiate it or remove it.

8. Standards & Methodologies

Where a claim rests on measurement, the measurement follows a recognized standard: CRRC product rating program procedures for solar reflectance and thermal emittance; AAMA 2605 for the coating system; ASTM D4214 (chalking) and ASTM D2244 (colour change) for coating performance; UL 2218 for impact resistance; and the evaluation criteria applied in CCMC and ICC-ES reports. Claims about recyclability and recycled content rest on the documented properties of aluminum and on the manufacturer's published figures. Where a claim rests on a comparison, we state what is being compared.
